CCD: FULL 13'x13'armin READOUT: QUAD GAIN INDEX: 2: Read Noise ~ 2.5 ADU = 3.5 e- FILTER SET: UBVRI ----------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTES FOR TARGET FIELDS ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Please observe all priority 1 objects. 2. In each of BVR, check that center (or brightest pixels in central region) of galaxy will not saturate in a 5 minute exposure. If galaxy will saturate, reduce exposure time. 3. Take 3 exposures (5 minutes each) in each of B, V, and R, and 6 exposures (5 minutes each) in I (there will thus be a total integration time of 15mins in each of B, V, and R, and a total integration time of 30mins in I). Please shift field slightly (ie. "dither" by ~20") in between each exposure in the same filter, so that all exposures in a given filter are at different positions (this will mitigate impact of dead columns in the CCD). Exposures in different filters can be at the same position, so a suitable observing sequence would be to take exposures in B, V, R, I at one position, shift field, take more exposures at B, V, R, I, etc. 4. Photometric weather is highly preferred, but non-photometric observations may be used. In case of non-photometric conditions, please add an additional I exposure to as many galaxies as possible to replace time allocated for standards. Note: All coordinates J2000.0 ----------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTES FOR CALIBRATION FIELDS ----------------------------------------------------------------------- IF PHOTOMETRIC: 1. Please take 5-10 DOME AND 3-5 SKY flats in each of BVRI at the END of the night. Please track during the sky flats, and dither by ~20" between the exposures in a given filter. Please note whether or not conditions are photometric at start of run (that is, in the middle of the night) in the log. 2. Observe 3 Landolt standard fields (they can be the same field) in each of BVRI at different airmasses between 1.0 and 2.0 AT THE START AND END of the run. At the end of the run, please observe the standards during astronomical twilight to maximize time for science exposures. Please check to make sure that standard stars are not saturated and that airmass spans 1.0-2.0. DO NOT OBSERVE STANDARDS IF NON-PHOTOMETRIC - INSTEAD ADD EXTRA I EXPOSURES TO AS MANY GALAXIES AS POSSIBLE ----------------------------------------------------------------------- OBSERVING SEQUENCE ----------------------------------------------------------------------- *** Standard star fields for start of run: pick as appropriate *** FIELD Landolt Standard RU149 PRIORITY 1 (only if photometric) COORDINATES 07 24 13 -00 31 58 FINDER CHART http://www.physics.rutgers.edu/~spekkens/2007B/RU149.html AIRMASS 1.1-1.3 FILTER(S) B,V,R,I INTEGRATION(S) 80,40,40,60 TOTAL TIME 6 minutes NOTES requires photometric conditions FIELD Landolt Standard SA95_105 PRIORITY 1 (only if photometric) COORDINATES 03 53 21, -00 00 01 FINDER CHART http://www.physics.rutgers.edu/~spekkens/2007B/SA95.html AIRMASS 1.3-1.6 FILTER(S) B,V,R,I INTEGRATION(S) 100,200,60,80 TOTAL TIME 9 minutes NOTES requires photometric conditions, can be done during astronomical twilight FIELD Landolt Standard PG0918+029 PRIORITY 1 (only if photometric) COORDINATES 09 21 28 02 46 06 FINDER CHART http://www.physics.rutgers.edu/~spekkens/2007B/PG0918.html AIRMASS 1.5-2.0 FILTER(S) B,V,R,I INTEGRATION(S) 100,40,40,40 TOTAL TIME 6 minutes NOTES requires photometric conditions ** PRIORITY 1 OBJECTS: FIELD NGC 1964 PRIORITY 1 COORDINATES 05 33 21.7 -21 56 45 FINDER CHART http://www.physics.rutgers.edu/~spekkens/2007B/n1964.html AIRMASS 1.0-1.5 FILTER(S) B,V,R,I INTEGRATION(S) 3x300s in EACH OF B,V,R, 6x300s in I TOTAL TIME 90 minutes NOTES please take 1 exposure in each of B,V,R,I, then dither field, then take another exposure, etc, until desired total exposure time is reached in each band.
